Small Projects

Small Projects

Bonjour and welcome back! I hope you enjoyed my last post ‘My Process‘ and got to know me a little more and how I do things.

Today I thought I’d talk about some of the smaller projects that can be done with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. The thing I love about chalk paint is you’re not limited to only using it on furniture, it’s actually designed to adhere to many different surfaces including wood, plastic, metal, fabric and much more. I love pushing the boundaries with chalk paint and seeing what will work and what maybe won’t work a hundred percent, but hey you’ve got to give things a try.

Now I am defintely not the most crafty person around, in fact crafts are not really my thing at all because I find them too finicky, time consuming and frustrating. I still don’t even feel too comfortable calling myself an artist of any kind really despite revamping my pieces of furniture. I guess to a lot it’s art but I at times feel a little like an imposter, as I’ve always struggled with art. I love art. I have ideas and images in my head but getting them down on paper…….yeah that’s a whole other thing that’s not going to happen. I simply don’t have the ability for drawing…..stick figures, absolutely! To draw or paint freehand, nope. I may have to do something about this though.

Anyhow, I’m digressing. That’s what happens when you’re a rambler like me. While I don’t consider myself crafty, I have actually been working on smaller projects of late that still have me using chalk paint, blending, gold leafing and using decals. I might not be painting freehand but working on smaller projects gives me the opportunity to try something new and to train myself to be more of an artist. Yes I use tools to help such as stencils and decals but I still use my own imagination to create custom colours, decide on colours for a piece and how I want it all to come together cohesively. And this is the part I love.

The first small project I want to share with you is a 90’s jewellery box that almost every girl and woman had. They’re a very plain item and being mass produced they don’t really have any unique qualities to them. So when I saw one at my local op shop (thrift store) I literally pounced on it because I knew exactly what I would do with it and how to make it unique. Inspired by the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s I decided to attempt to create my own version of Tiffany Blue to give the jewellery box some glam and wow factor. And being as I’m a lover of gold, I gave it some gold leafing as well. I also decided to dress up the outside of the drawers with the Floral Court Transfer from ReDesign With Prima. (Unfotunately this transfer has been discontinued but maybe one day ReDesign will bring it back.) The drawers are usually forgotten about but who doesn’t want something pretty to look at when you open a drawer.

A very tired 90’s jewllery box
Revamped with a custom colour inspired by Tiffany Blue
Plenty of room for all your bits and pieces.
Floral Court Transfer on the drawers as well as the door.
All the gold trim has been done by using gold leaf.

So there you have it from tired and worn out to revamped and refreshed, this jewellery box is now looking glamorous and alive and ready to find her forever home.

There are so many small projects to be done with Chalk Paint and I will share more that I’ve done and some I’m in the process of doing. The only thing limiting you as to how you dress up a project is your imagination, so think outside the box and be adventurous with colour and colour mixing as well. If you want to stay in the loop as to what I’m working on then come follow me along on Instagram and Facebook to stay up to date with my latest projects. Take care for now and I’ll catch you again soon.

À bientôt….Michelle x
